The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

Master thesis: Microplastics in waterbodies from Schleswig-Holstein (m/f/d)

Background
Schleswig-Holstein is characterized by a high number of waterbodies such as lakes and rivers.
Within the framework of the project MikroStrat-SH2 freshwater sediments as well as water samples will be analyzed for microplastics (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm). The goal is to get an overview of environmental microplastic concentrations in Schleswig-Holstein.

Tasks
In the framework of the Master thesis, efficient methods for the extraction of environmental microplastics from lake and river sediment and water will be developed and environmental samples will be analyzed for microplastics. Samples will be extracted & purified and finally analyzed by ATR-FTIR- or micro FTIR spectroscopy.

Requirements
We are looking for Master students in chemistry or environmental sciences.

Further Information
The place of employment will be Helgoland.

Start: March/April 2024
