The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc in "Detecting changes in Southern Ocean biogeography" (m/f/d)
Background
Warming of the global climate drives multiple and co-occurring environmental changes in the polar oceans, such as sea-ice loss, warming of the ocean, changes in circulation, and nutrient dynamics. These changes collectively are expected to disturb biological carbon cycling and ecosystems in polar regions. In this contribution to POMP, we aim to simulate the habitats of the key phyto- and zooplankton groups in the Southern Ocean using the ocean and sea ice biogeochemistry/ecosystem model FESOM-REcoM. With those simulations, we will track any historical changes in plankton habitats and investigate implications for carbon uptake, storage, and sequestration. Further, the vulnerability of these ecosystems and their carbon storage potential to future climate change and biological carbon-climate feedbacks will be quantified in model projections. The project will focus be on the Southern Ocean, the influence of different iron sources, and the distinct roles of heavily versus weakly silicified diatoms.
The preferred starting date is in the summer of 2024.
Tasks
- Set up/evaluate a Southern Ocean model configuration
- Implement additional iron sources and a new plankton functional type (a heavily silicified diatom)
- Conduct model simulations (recent decades, future)
- Assess Southern Ocean biogeography and the system’s sensitivity to climate change
- Follow the consequences of biogeographical shifts on the storage and cycling of carbon in the model
- Presentation of project results in peer-reviewed publications and in international conferences.
Requirements
- a PhD in oceanography, marine sciences, biology, geosciences, climate sciences or related field
- Expertise in some of the following fields: marine phytoplankton, biological carbon pump, ocean biogeochemistry, ocean modelling
- Proven skills in Fortran, Python, or a similar programming language
- Skills in the processing, statistical analysis, and visualization of large data sets
- Strong English language skills
- Ability to work focused, independently, and cooperatively in a team
