The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc in "The historical and future coastal ocean carbon sink" (m/f/d)
Background
The ocean takes up about a quarter of human CO2 emissions each year as quantified by the global ocean biogeochemistry models in the Global Carbon Budget. The coastal ocean carbon sink is conceptually included in the Global Carbon Budget ocean sink estimate, but in reality, coastal shelf processes are not resolved in the global models. In OceanPeak, we will use the multi-resolution ocean carbon cycle model FESOM-REcoM to set-up a model system with a high resolution on the shelves and with a seamless transition from the coastal shelves to the open ocean. This will allow us to assess regional carbon budgets and their perturbations by climate change and other changing environmental boundary conditions.
The preferred starting date is summer/autumn 2024.
Tasks
- Set up, tune and evaluate the seamless modelling system of the open and coastal ocean carbon cycle
- Conduct model simulations covering the recent decades and the future
- Quantify the evolution of the global coastal ocean carbon sink (mean, variability, trends)
- Identify drivers of the global coastal ocean carbon sink
- Presentation of project results in peer-reviewed publications and international conferences.
Requirements
- PhD in oceanography, marine sciences, physics, geosciences, climate sciences or related field
- Expertise in ocean biogeochemistry
- Experience with ocean carbon cycle modelling
- Proven skills in Fortran, Python, or similar programming language
- Skills in the processing, statistical analysis, and visualization of data
- Strong English language skills
- Ability to work focused, independently, and cooperatively in a team.
Additional skills and knowledge- Experience in coastal ocean biogeochemistry and/or coastal ocean modelling.
